This is the second of the pair. Another Big Horn evening scene. These are painted 3x3” watercolor compositions I intended to use as studies but never developed. The exercise of painting very small is so helpful when I’ve been in the habit of painting too many details, or over painting one part of a larger painting. It’s just enough space to paint what matters in a composition. Thrilled for these to finally hang in someone’s home to enjoy.

30x30”!!!!

One thing about this show is that I painted bigger than I ever have. It took longer than expected to paint everything so fortunately the exhibit space is relatively small… I painted for 6 months after another 6 months of previous planning. My goal was to commit to stylism, although i certainly got carried away with details at some point or another with the close up shots… well, others too I guess.

All you can do is keep painting and be as intentional (or try not to be) as possible.

Just paint it. It’ll sell or it won’t, but you’ll learn something…

A few days ago I came across an article about my Grandad’s experience abroad playing intercollegiate polo with one of my Granny’s cousins, George A. “Frolic” Weymouth. They played in England in 1958 for six weeks…

At the time, Grandad was captain of the University of Virginia team, and Cousin Frolic was captain of the Yale polo team. They played together on the team organized by the USPA to represent the United states. I can only imagine how cool it would be to watch him in this tournament… how proud it would have made me to see him play at such a level in his prime. I wish I ever got to watch him ride more.

Because he and my Granny were divorced in my early life, I didn’t ask one much about the other… but the story I always told myself was this is essentially that he met my Granny because of this experience.

Because, after the meeting of Grandad and Frolic, Grandad told me (for certain) he went home with Frolic for Thanksgiving holiday one year….Wilmington, Delaware being much closer than Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where his family would have been.

I don’t know if that’s the truth but it’s another one of the stories that has blended in my memory. I can imagine it clearly. Grandad was a great flirt and very handsome. A total charmer well into his old age. He always had a great joke or just even a punchline that could send the room into fits. He could hold it together with just a sniff and a smirk, just a slight curl to his lip while looked around sideways, plus a raised eyebrow as he chuckled to himself while it took you a moment to catch up… else his laugh could be contagious and booming … and I bet more than once or twice I saw his eyes well with tears after hysterics subsided.

I also knew Frolic briefly in his old age. He notoriously threw great parties. I can imagine Grandad winning over “Cousin Sheila” with teasing and smart ass jokes. It’s overly romantic but it’s totally possible!

Margrade

This isn’t her, but my grandad had an old gray polo pony named Marguerite when I was a little kid. She was one of his string in the era of Flaco, Levi, Kara, Oke… we were little enough that somehow her name was “Margrade” to us kids (we 11 Grandkids). It’s lost to anyone as to how this renaming occurred and I think I even found that out because I asked him one time how Margrade was as a polo pony and he didn’t even know what horse I was talking about. 😆

But ask any of us kids and we all know who Margrade was.

She was fleabitten but fairly white in my memory, with a dark gray muzzle. I remember best her withers. Possibly my earliest memory of sitting on a horse. Holding on to the pommel of Grandads polo saddle with my legs dangling. I think like many horse crazy people, the smell of leather and horse hide takes you back somewhere into a memory. He would lead us around the round corral in the courtyard of his barn at Needmore Farm… as in the picture, more or less waiting our turn sitting on the fence.

If you knew my Grandad and you have a tale to tell about him, or about his polo ponies, hunting dogs, or anything else, I’d love to hear it. 1) My recent painting I’ve got to finish up for my show at the @wyotheater (going up next month) of my friend @fernandosalaverria horse’s name is Orgullosa.
2) Grandad and Margrade in the courtyard at Needmore with the older of the grandkids: Me, Ridgely, (?- not a cousin), Elinore, Julia, Lelia (scowling per usual), and Mary Jennings.
3) My mom, Robin, age 3 probably? Assuming that’s Grandads pony. My Granny (looking just like my mom) on the right reaching for her leg.
4) My little cousin Hughie riding a Greenhalgh pony at Shan Hill Farm cerca 2009 (?) with Grandad. (He’s not little anymore)
5) Grandad fishing in his underwear at Needmore… bc it’s great.

Even well after bedtime I remember crouching by the windows upstairs peering over the porch, eavesdropping, whether I was tired or not.

Much of the day until dusk, all us cousins would be outside. Locking one another in the dog kennels, playing with the barn cats down the hill, waving huge wads of tall thick Virginia grass at the Greenhalgh’s polo ponies as we sat on the fence behind his kitchen window, trying to get them to come let us pet them (smell them!! 😍)…. We’d walk in lines, heel-toe heel-toe, along the stone walls that bordered the house… making forts in the giant boxwoods around the big stone house… playing Kidnapper… hide & seek…

Grandad liked to play pranks. I have this memory that I’m not even sure is true, but the image is in my mind so its true enough for me— He and Bobby Lindgren would step out to relieve themselves in the bushes, or onto this GIANT tree that stood off the patio a ways (but not really far enough away to quit telling his story from over his shoulder). This time, Grandad told us a monster got Bobby and he was shooing us to go find him out in the yard.

When I think for myself who has been the person in my life who I most wanted to please, it might have been my Grandad. He was the person that encouraged me in my interests I think because we shared them so closely. He loved art and he loved horses. He was not a painter, he just appreciated deeply what he liked in art and was very confident in his own assessments about what was good or otherwise (lol)… I laugh because he was so convicted about what was “good”, never mind what you think 😆 I loved and still appreciate that idea and somewhat live my life that way... According to Grandad you have to love what you love and allow the rest to sort of go by you. (Wait, that’s the part that I understand... He would say “you’re wrong, that horses’ ear looks like a rabbit’s” or “…terrible legs”)
(… Ugh, the legs 🤦🏼‍♀️ it took so long to get them right.)

So he wasn’t an artist, but he played polo. I never saw him play, but I loved to hear him talk about horses and horse people. Bits.. spurs… bridles… tack…. He had opinions about all of those things. He talked about his polo friends endlessly. What characters!
He’d go on… Horsemanship… hands, posture, brains, bad mouth, good mouth, run through the bridle, this idiot and that— 🙄 … yeah right, I loved it. I’d listen all night…. Suffering through the cigarette smoke and burping 😆 My Grandad could burp like a bullfrog.
Shit… I fucking miss him.

He’s also the reason I landed in Sheridan. I heard about Sheridan and the famous WYO Rodeo and the Indian Relay Races and Big Horn Polo for all my young life before I ever set foot in Wyoming. I didn’t move here because of him directly, I had my own introductory experience… but in hindsight, It was this faraway romantic place where my Grandad was a cowboy. He talked about helping move cows on his friend’s great big ranch along the Big Horn Mountains. He was my Will James, my John Wayne.

I have never cried about someone as much as I have Grandad. Alone, randomly when I think of him, or hear his voice in my head. I never wished so bad that I could call someone as I do him…. I saved so many voicemails of his. The last note he wrote me before he passed is still on my fridge……….

Meet Pippin, the suavest corgi in town! 🎩🐾

After a busy six months or so I’m finally feeling caught up… just in time to switch gears for my summer show. 😵‍💫😃 I’ll be sharing all the Christmas work I couldn’t post during the holiday season over the next few weeks!

I put the finishing touches on this watercolor portrait just this week. What do you think? Pawsitively dashing, right? 😄
