2026 ARTIST STATEMENT

I create watercolor paintings of landscapes and scenes drawn from horse cultures. My work is rooted in a deep connection to the places that accommodate horses and the communities that form around them. Over time and through travel, I have come to recognize that horse people often share a unique sensitivity-- not only towards horses themselves but also toward one another and the landscapes they inhabit together. This sensitivity is cross-cultural and recognizable, it's a connecting force. 

Working primarily in watercolor and gouache, I build representational paintings through layering techniques, allowing atmosphere, light, and my memories to emerge. I often incorporate ink to refine details and introduce an illustrative quality that reflects my background in drawing and observation.

My hope is that viewers experience the sense of belonging I have found within these cultures and landscapes, as well as the attentiveness and nuanced recognition that horse people have for one another and to the spaces that support their relationships. My work offers an opportunity to reflect on how people are shaped by the environments they inhabit and the relationships they cultivate.
